Why Taking Care of Cleaning Equipment Adds to the Bottom Line

Taking good care of your cleaning equipment not only extends the life of your machines, but it saves you money too. Cleaning equipment such as vacuums, buffing machines, and automatic scrubbers can last years longer with the proper care. Caring for your cleaning equipment also shows your clients that you are a professional and you are serious when it comes to making their buildings look good! Proper maintenance of equipment helps to assure that your machine is available when you need it and will help to avoid those unexpected equipment breakdowns.

Preventative maintenance is the best practice for your cleaning machines. Your maintenance program should start when you buy a new piece of equipment. Although very few people actually do it, begin by reading the owner's manual.

It will give you tips on operating the equipment as well as important advice on how to best maintain the equipment. With most of the large cleaning machines you buy, the distributor will offer custom training - be sure to take advantage of it! After you are familiar with the machine make sure that all of your cleaning employees that will operate that piece of equipment know how to properly use it.

Vacuum cleaners are the most used of all cleaning equipment and daily maintenance is the key to keeping your vacuums running smoothly. Check the bag, belt and brush roll often. One of the most important steps in maintaining your vacuum is to make sure the bag is emptied daily if necessary and before it is more than half full. Emptying the bag regularly helps to prevent clogs and will keep the vacuum running more efficiently.

Before each shift employees should check the vacuum for frayed cords and any loose wires or parts. The problem should be corrected before the vacuum is used.

Employees need to pay attention to the vacuum's beater bar. The bar needs cleaning on a regular basis. It takes just a few minutes to remove any hair, carpet threads, and debris on the bar. Ignoring the beater bar can cause extra pressure on the belt drive and can even damage the belt.

Belts on vacuums are easily replaced. However, if you are at all in doubt on how to replace the belt it is best to contact the distributor and get assistance.

Maintenance can be a bit more time consuming on more complex machines such as auto scrubbers and buffers. Wipe down the entire surface after each use. Also wipe the cord and make sure it is not frayed. Check the pads after each use and replace them as needed.

Other routine maintenance includes blowing out the motor every 2 weeks and once a month check to make sure that all screws and bolts are tight. Rinse out the tanks after each use. Also inspect equipment for any cracks or damage.

Brushes on auto scrubbers can be magnets for small objects. Check and clean the brushes on a regular basis. Squeegees can also attract debris.

Lint and hair can cause rips and tears in squeegees, which hinders the squeegee's effectiveness.

If you have battery-powered equipment, check the owner's manual so that you know what type of battery powers your scrubbers and buffers. If the equipment has an acid-battery, add distilled water as specified in the manual.

Make sure that any necessary parts are lubricated as directed in the manual. If you have any questions on the proper procedures always check with the distributor or manufacturer before doing any maintenance.

Various parts of any machine such as belts, brushes, and squeegees will need to be replaced as they become worn. The owner's manual for the equipment will have general guidelines on when to replace worn items. If the equipment is used by inexperienced operators or in extremely dirty conditions parts may need replaced more often than the recommended guidelines.

Paying close attention to how the machine runs will help you decide when items should be replaced.

First impressions make a difference. Equipment that has a layer of dust, frayed cords, cracks or stains can give the impression that you do not care enough about your business to properly care for your cleaning machines. Likewise, if your customers see your equipment is clean and well cared for, it shows that you pay attention to detail. A few extra minutes each day in caring for your carpet and floor machines can pay off large dividends in the long term.

Carpet Cleaning Machines

There is a wide variety of carpet cleaning machines to choose from. The most commonly used is a vacuum cleaner. Most people prefer an 'upright' vacuum cleaner over a 'canister' for convenience. Some people also like to use a 'hand-held' for stairs and other carpeted areas that don't offer maneuverability.

An 'upright' vacuum cleaner can be used with one or two motors, depending on the type of dirt that accumulates and the type and frequency of cleaning required. Some people also like to use 'spotters' for spot cleaning.

These usually have rotating brushes to scrub the stain off the carpet. In order to select the right carpet cleaning machine, we also need to be sensitive to the fabric that the carpet is made up of.

Another type of carpet cleaning machine is called the 'carpet cleaning extractor'. The extractor is ideal for deep cleaning. Use a regular 'carpet cleaning extractor' or a 'self-contained' one.

A 'carpet cleaning extractor' is suitable...

Industrial Vacuums

Industries are difficult places to maintain cleanliness and therefore require specialized cleaning solutions. Thanks to the advancement in technology, today's industrial vacuums silently go about their work, making them almost an indispensable part of any industry. Space, aviation, engineering, medical, entertainments, telecommunications, even military, you name it and there is no industry, which does not depend upon industrial vacuums.

The use of corrosive chemicals and other metals in manufacturing processes results in the deposition of dirt or dust on to metallic as well as non-metallic substances. This generally results in a thin film deposition.

Such deposits are difficult to remove and require a specialized vacuum process. The process most widely used in industries is known as physical vapor deposition, which is a combination of two processes again, namely, sputtering and evaporation. Similarly to this are other vacuum processes implemented in industries....

Kevin Hill of Toolup.com Reviews the Dewalt Portable Vacuum that runs on Batteries!

The DeWALT DC500 sold at www.toolup.comReviewed by Kevin Hill. The DeWALT DC500 corded/cordless vacuum cleaner is a very handy vacuum to have around the garage.I have used it personally, and I find it very convenient and simply to use. Where I really find that the DC500 works well is the quick and simple jobs that you need around the garage. Things you would have normally used the broom and dustpan for. This little guy will suck up the dust and dirt quick. With a suitably long cord; it's not miles long, it's easy to move around and use without having to get an extension cord for every time that you need it.Just recently, I also purchased a DW421 to handle a small sanding job that I had. Previously, without the DC500 it was a (saw) dusty experience requiring breathing protection and LOTS of sawdust.

On a whim, I pulled out my DC500 the next time I had a sanding job, and placed the end of the vacuum hose into the DW421 and found...

Proper Vacuuming Helps Prevent Further Risks for Children with Lead Poisoning

Boise, Idaho (ContentDesk) March 21, 2006 -- Children face many health challenges and risks. In Erie County, PA, this includes lead poisoning - a risk faced by numerous children in the community. The county, which has a population of 280,000, has many homes built before 1970 that were painted using lead-based products. The Erie County Department of Health (ECDH) provides a program to assist families with children six years of age or younger who have lead poisoning or who have been identified as at risk.
The Department recently received an added benefit to help low-income families in the countys childhood lead poisoning prevention program. On one of my home visits I saw a mother trying to clean her carpet using a broom, says Laurie Preston, community health specialist with the ECDH.

This obviously wasnt an appropriate solution but it was what she had available. We had to find a better way to help this family and others to address the need for providing a clean environment...

The Rich History of Chrysanthemums

Did you know that those lush, colorful blooms called chrysanthemums are rooted in beliefs of human immortality and perfection? Today the "mum" graces gardens, cut flower arrangements and even salads (yes mums taste great), but they were taken much more seriously after T'ao Yuan Ming started it all in China around 500 A.D.Over long periods of careful cross-pollination and selection, he developed stunning varieties of the flower and when he died, his birthplace was renamed Chuhsien. The City of...

Horse Training: How To Stop A Horse From Running Away

Running away, like all other habits, is caused by improper and careless handling. It only takes three or four experiences of this kind to make a horse unsafe to drive, ride or work. The driver is never sure whether he will get back with the whole rig or not. This is not the only bad feature of having a runaway horse, for the driver never knows when he will be thrown out, in making a quick turn, or running over some sort of an obstruction and either badly shaken up, or, possibly crippled for life....
